The crucial transformation, to which you make no reference, is the number of people going to university. Now almost half of young people go to university; in the &#039;sixties it was 20%. In 1860 it was, apparently, far less than 1%. The university model that you seem to prefer belongs to a more selective (for good or bad) era. Mass education almost inevitably goes hand in hand with an utilitarian and vocational approach. I too prefer what I would call the classical model, but do not believe that it is socially or politically viable any more. Perhaps the answer is the creation - beside existing Universities - of small, privately funded Universities, on the American model. But they would almost inevitably find their base only among the rich or the highly committed (i.e. mostly the religious).</description>
